Female athletes at the Yarraville Club Cricket Club in Melbourne's West are facing a situation that is not only inconvenient but also downright creepy. The issue? Inadequate and shared shower and toilet facilities with male teams, due to the Maribyrnong City Council's failure to deliver on promised upgrades.
The Promise and the Delay
The club's president, Darren Cain, paints a picture of continuous neglect by the council. Despite receiving a draft master plan in 2023 that included new social rooms and facilities, the project has been delayed for years, leaving the club's female members in a precarious position.
"The reserve has been overlooked," Cain asserts. "We have a thriving club with six senior men's teams, a senior women's team, and five junior teams, yet we lack dedicated women's facilities."
A Jail-Like Experience
The current facilities are described as "like a jail" by Caetlyn Twentyman, captain of the female cricket team. The exposed showers, lack of privacy, and non-functional locks create an environment that is not only uncomfortable but also potentially unsafe.
"It's creepy," Twentyman says. "Imagine having to shower with someone standing guard outside the bathroom door."
Impact on Women's Participation
The situation is not just an inconvenience; it's a deterrent to women's participation in the sport. Twentyman fears that the lack of suitable facilities could discourage young girls from joining the club, especially with the recent focus on recruiting girls under 11 through the Blasters Program.
"What if a young girl walks in on an older male changing? It's a scenario that no parent should have to worry about," she adds.
Council's Response and Priorities
Maribyrnong City Council Mayor Mohamed Semra acknowledges the delay, blaming it on "project priorities." The council promises to "continue to look for funding opportunities" and review the project during the next budget process. However, in the meantime, they plan to install temporary facilities by the end of the year.
